A new scholarship was established recently by the leaders of OCSEA District Council 1 in memory of Pat Callanan-Castro. She passed away June 8, 2006.

In honor of Pat's commitment to education, the scholarship fund is earmarked to help union members who have returned to school with the purchase of books.

The application period runs concurrently with the Les Best Scholarship, Jan. 1, 2008 - April 30, 2008, for the 2008 - 2009 academic year.

Union members who make application to the Les Best Scholarship Fund are also eligible for the Pat Callanan-Castro Memorial Book Scholarship.

Two $150 book scholarships will be awarded. The judges evaluating the Les Best applications will at the same time be considering potential recipients for the Pat Callanan-Castro Memorial Book Scholarship for Members.

"This scholarship is given in memory of Pat and all the opportunities she created for people," said OCSEA District Council 1 officer Donna Westrick.

Pat, a former member of the OCSEA Board of Directors, was an avid reader and a lifelong learner. Her passion for working families and union activism impacted her children, co-workers, and community. She was very active in labor activities in Northwest Ohio and around the state.

A former ODJFS employee, Pat was active in the OCSEA/ODJFS Assembly, Lucas Chapter 4800, OCSEA District Council 1, Women's Action Committee, and much more.
