About

The program was created 20 years ago to help union members and their families with education costs for their children. Over the years, the union has expanded the program to include spouses and members.

Now, union scholarship dollars can do even more for OCSEA families thanks to a 2009-2010 decision by the Board of Directors to double the total amount awarded from $6,000 to $12,000. Additionally, the number of awards in the Spouse's category was doubled.

OCSEA´s scholarship fund provides up to 12 financial awards for each academic year to eligible union members, spouses and their dependent children.

  • Dependents' College Scholarship: For students entering or already enrolled full-time in a college or university; three $2,000 scholarships awarded.
  • Dependents' Vocational Scholarship: For a student entering or already enrolled full-time in a technical, trade or vocational school; one $2,000 scholarship awarded.

  • Spouse's College Scholarship: For spouses who are full-time students, or will begin studies in the fall; either two scholarships for $1,000 awarded, or four scholarships for $500 each awarded — to be determined by the committee.
  • Members' College Scholarship: For members who are either full-time or part-time undergraduate students, or will begin studies in the fall; either two scholarships for $1,000 awarded, or four scholarships for $500 each awarded — to be determined by the committee.

Les Best Scholarship Members’ College applicants are also eligible for a book scholarship, established by OCSEA District 1 in the name of Pat Callanan-Castro who was an avid reader and a lifelong learner.

  • Pat Callanan-Castro Memorial Book Scholarship for Members: Two $150 book scholarships will be awarded to eligible union members. Children and spouses are not eligible for this book award. The judges evaluating the Members' College applications will at the same time be considering potential recipients for this new Memorial Book Scholarship.

Selection Process The award recipients are chosen by the Les Best Scholarship Selection Committee. The committee is an independent group of distinguished educators and labor union representatives. Their decisions are final. Award recipients are announced each year in the Summer issue of the Public Employee Quarterly magazine.
