Ohio's Best Rx launched today; Taft appoints OCSEA staff to council

Jan. 11, 2005 - More than a year ago, the Ohio General Assembly approved the passage of the labor-backed Best Rx legislation (H.B. 311 and S. B. 138).

The Ohio AFL-CIO had joined with two dozen community service and non-profit organizations to represent the uninsured and seniors who need help with paying for medicine. The coalition achieved its goal: Secure a maximum discount for the greatest number of people who need it.

OCSEA members and other union activists had signed petitions and sent emails urging legislators to pass the bill, making prescription drugs more affordable for the state's uninsured and elderly.

Marianne Steger, OCSEA's Director of Health Care Policy and Human Resources, has been appointed by the governor to sit on the Best Rx Program Council which plays an oversight role.

"This program is important because even though our members have health care, members of their families may not," Steger said. "And this program will provide reduced prescription costs for them."

Media statewide covered the program's launch today, acknowledging labor's role in its creation.
