 PATHWAYS TO EXCELLENCE

Gov. Strickland: Providing valued services in state government important work
Keynote speaker shares reinvention experiences from Iowa, offers encouragement to activists

GOV. TED STRICKLAND
JIM CHRISINGER

Feb. 15, 2007 (revised March 7, 2007) - Can bureaucracy in state government be turned around to provide customers the service they are looking for? With hope rekindled by a new administration, many Ohio quality activists who participated in today's Pathways to Excellence event would answer,"Yes."

Gov. Ted Strickland was able to add the event, sponsored by the Ohio Quality Network, to his busy schedule to remind state employees that providing valued services in state government is important work.

Strickland said that there's no room for good ideas if better ones exist. He said that the frontline employees doing the work have the best insight on how to do it better, creating greater efficiencies for customers and saving dollars for taxpayers.

His message was reinforced by keynote speaker Jim Chrisinger, author of Iowa’s Accountable Government Act. Chrisinger asserts that government can:

  • treat people like customers;
  • prioritize to live within its means;
  • make results for people more important than one-size-fits-all rules, and
  • dramatically improve performance.

OCSEA President Ronald Alexander and Operations Director Bruce Wyngaard addressed the crowd. OCSEA Executive Director Andy Douglas also attended the event.

Alexander noted of the governor's participation in the Pathways to Excellence event, "His attendance today reflects an underlying belief in the value of government and the importance he places on the services we provide. We appreciate very much the Governor accepting our invitation to make a few remarks."

The workshops included materials that are available for download:

> UNDERSTANDING MEASUREMENT (PDF) - Anita Jennings and Rachel Graham reminds us of "why measurement" works.

> NEW PHONE TECHNOLOGY (PDF) - John Trott and Anita Skinner describes how local operations used technology to make improvements at ODJFS call centers.

The Ohio Quality Network is a group of labor and management quality coordinators who work within their agencies to preserve the quality initiative.
