Assistance available to public employee union members through Ombuds Office

May 2007 - The Ohio Workers' Compensation Ombudspersons Office serves as an impartial liaison between the injured worker, employer or medical provider, and the Bureau of Workers Compensation (BWC) or the Industrial Commission of Ohio (IC).

The BWC is responsible for collecting workers' compensation insurance premiums, overseeing the insurance system, and paying out compensable claims. The IC steps in when a BWC claim is disputed.

Ombudspersons, who are also public employees, investigate complaints and answer general inquiries about the Ohio workers’ compensation system. OCSEA members who need help in in dealing with BWC and the IC may contact the Ombuds office if:

  • You have made a reasonable effort to resolve your problem through normal processes, and it is still not resolved;
  • You need more information and don’t know where to turn;
  • You are not satisfied with BWC or IC services; or
  • You have an emergency that requires immediate action within the workers’ compensation system.
