Next Wave logoFacts and figures

While many questions exist about how an aging workforce and union membership will impact OCSEA and State of Ohio government agencies, we do have some interesting projections.

Did you know that...?

60 million workers are between the ages of 43 and 61 and the first of these “baby boomers” will begin retiring in 2011 (2008 if they retire at age 62).

Starting in 2012, nearly 10,000 Americans will turn age 65 every day.

Over the next 15 years, over two-thirds of OCSEA’s members will be at retirement age or older.

The average age of OCSEA chapter leaders is 49 years old and among the OCSEA Board of Directors, it’s 50.

At 47, the average steward is only a little younger.

These statistics are jarringly clear: OCSEA activists are getting older.

As even more activists prepare for life after retirement, one question remains, "Who will be there to take the reins?"
