Next Wave logoNext wave speaks out about future

Younger leaders were spotlighted at this year’s OCSEA Convention and spoke out about the issues that are important to them.

Erick Kusky and Christine Cole (both below) are among these innovators who are eager to get involved with the Next Wave of union activism for their future... and ours.

Kusky, in fact, was thrilled to attend his first convention because he is very passionate about unionism and workers’ rights.

“One of the biggest issues we face in DR&C – and this spans across all ages – is safety in the workplace.

"We need more training to deal with dangerous situations and I think that’s something that young workers will fight for,” Kusky said.

This chief steward and CO is also very excited that he’s taken this Next Wave step into union activism and is pumped about working closely with other members to educate younger employees about the importance of having and being involved in a union.

“Job security, or lack thereof, is a major issue for me. Although we presently have a labor-friendly governor that doesn't mean it will always be that way.

Cole agrees, noting how the political landscape impacts this next wave.

"Privatization of government jobs seems to be the answer for many of the states across this nation – Ohio being no exception. The trend is to outsource rather than finding ways to correct poor financial management," Cole said.

"So, states pay more and get less. Workers need to pay close attention to the quality of service they are providing, push to contract back in services lost to privatization."

Did you know that... 60 million workers are between the ages of 43 and 61 and the first of these “baby boomers” will begin retiring in 2011 —2008 if they retire at age 62?

Cole added that starting in 2012, nearly 10,000 Americans will turn age 65 every day.

In fact, over the next 15 years, more than two-thirds of OCSEA’s members will be at retirement age or older. and, most importantly, support labor-friendly politicians.
