Glossary Terms describe power-building activities

A list of terms related to the Union Power initiatve are listed below. If you have additional suggestions, please send an email to Sandi Trout at strout@ocsea.org.

Action card - These post cards are used to prompt member mobilization on requested action (i.e. call your legislator, mail the attached postcard, etc.).

Brown Bags - Union member use these informal gatherings during the lunch hour to discuss or exchange union-building information.

Chapter/Assembly/District Council meetings - OCSEA members may use subordinate body meetings to express opinions, share ideas, ask questions, make power plans, and members are encouraged to take the information back to coworkers.

Coalition Building - OCSEA members may build relationships in Ohio communities with public service customer groups and other stakeholders locally and statewide.

Cooler talk - Share information about bargaining unit employees at about union issues such as bargaining.

Community Outreach - Show your community union power through volunteer activities, donations, and service.

Grassroots Political Action - Participate in a variety of political activities (i.e. get out the vote, endorsements, lobbying, e-alerts). The Take Back Ohio campaign needs power activists now! Stay tuned for more information.

Letter writing campaigns - Write letters and send them via U.S. Mail, fax and email to legislators and other key decision makers to demonstrate to exert union power on an issue.

Literature drops - Distribute printed materials to union members in the workplace.

Phone banks - Coordinate volunteers or work phone banks that deliver messages that build union power.

Public Awareness - Carry message to local community via letters to the editor, parade floats, guest speaker spots, etc. about what and how union power has a positive impact on public services.

Rallies - Participate in the coordination, promotion and execution of union building rallies at the local, regional and statewide levels.

Union-ware campaigns - Display or wear shirts, hats, pins, stickers, bumper stickers, and other union-promoting material that promote union building messages.

Union Bulletin Board Network (UBBN) - The act of receiving and posting current union material on the union bulleting board.

Workplace Actions - Participate in deliberate workplace actions that symbolize solidarity or demonstrate a particular message management about union power.
