Types of power-building activities

OCSEA members may participate at the local level in a variety of union building activities (see glossary) to amplify our collective voice.

The activities can be grouped into three different types:

Material-to-Member - Outreach to members face-to-face and over the phone

  • Union Bulletin Board Network (UBBN)
  • Literature drops
  • Letter writing campaigns
  • Action card campaigns

Member-to-Member - Outreach to members face-to-face and over the phone

  • Union-ware campaigns (shirts, hats, pins, stickers, bumper stickers, etc.)
  • Cooler talk (share union information with coworkers)
  • Brown bags
  • Workplace actions and events
  • Subordinate body meetings
  • Union events (conferences, trainings, regional forums, etc.)
  • Phone banks

Member-to-Non-Member - Outreach to neighbors, legislators, customers, etc.

  • Union-ware campaigns (shirts, hats, pins, stickers, bumper stickers, etc.)
  • Rallies and media events Phone banks
  • Coalition building activities
  • Community outreach activities
  • Legislative and political action events
