Online training offered through AFSCME's new Leadership Academy builds skills

Delegates to AFSCME’s 2006 International Convention approved the historic Power to Win plan of the 21st Century Initiative — a bold, new strategy to grow our union and increase our bargaining and political power.

The result is the new AFSCME Leadership Academy for activists, staff and leaders. Union members are reminded to participate on their own time at home, not on employer time nor employer equipment.

AFSCME activists can take hour-long, online training modules on:

  • Advocating for Health Care Reform
  • AFSCME Financial Standards Code
  • Effective Communications
  • AFSCME’s Power to Win Plan
  • Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA)
  • Making an Economy That Works for Us
  • Power through Organizing
  • Running a Successful PEOPLE Program
  • The Power of Grassroots Lobbying
  • Representing Workers in Disciplinary Hearings

"The number one concern we heard was the need to get more members involved in our union. Over and over – in countless meetings, in survey after survey – you asked the International Union to offer the tools and training you need to educate your members about how to take action," wrote AFSCME President McEntee and Secretary-Treasurer Lucy.

"You asked for it, and we are excited to deliver. We are proud to announce the launch of the AFSCME Leadership Academy, which we hope will help you to inspire more of your brothers and sisters to participate in organizing drives, contract campaigns, political action and other union activities."
