Deadline extended to Dec. 2; Nominate member for community service award
Nov. 22, 2005
- OCSEA's Horizon Award is given each year to one member who demonstrates positive service to the community or individuals in the community, or who has performed an act of heroism in the past year. The Horizon Award recipient will be honored at a special ceremony and presented with a plaque at the Dec. 10, 2005, OCSEA Board of Directors meeting in Columbus. OCSEA will donate $500 to the charity of the recipient's choice. FULL STORY

Spending cut bill approved by House, moves to Senate for reconciliation; Thank Rep. Ney for "no" vote

The House of Representatives passed their $49.5 billion spending cut bill (H.R. 4241) early Friday morning by the narrowest of margins. Please take a moment to thank Rep. Bob Ney (R) for voting against the package of cuts to Medicaid, food stamps and student loans to pay for a series of new tax cuts for the wealthy also moving through Congress. House Republican leadership suffers stunning defeat; Thanks to all members who made calls asking Regula to reconsider deep ES cuts
Nov. 21 , 2005
- The House of Representatives unexpectedly voted down the Labor-Health and Human Services (HHS) and Education spending bill (H.R. 3010) by a vote of 209-224, handing the leadership of the House a rare and dramatic defeat. If passed, OCSEA's ODJFS members would have been hurt by an unprecedented reduction of $230 million to the employment security program. Such a drastic cut would have led to the layoff of up to 4,000 state workers. FULL STORY

Dates set for contract negotiations; Wear your Union Power bracelet to support team
Nov. 15, 2005 - The first day of bargaining is just two weeks away. The OCSEA Negotiating Team and the State of Ohio will exchange bargaining proposals on Tuesday, Nov. 29. Bargaining begins the next day and continues throughout the weeks of December and January. The current contract expires on Feb. 28, 2006. FULL STORY

OCSEA thanks union activists, looks forward to strengthening reform movement
Nov. 9, 2005 - True change seldom comes easy—trying something new and different is always tough the first time out. Issues 2, 3, 4 & 5 were defeated yesterday at the polls , but our work on this campaign marks the beginning of a reform movement that will only grow as we head into 2006 and beyond. Colorado residents vote to suspend Taxpayers Bill of Rights (TABOR), restore critical state funding
Nov. 7, 2005 - The Coalition for Ohio's Future issued a statement last week about the rejection of TABOR (Taxpayers Bill of Rights) in Colorado. OCSEA is a part of the coalition that opposes proposals to forever force state and local governments to follow an unworkable and rigid budgeting formula. FULL STORY
