Making Change Happen: Ohio’s Blueprint to Elect Labor-Friendly Candidates Workshop Leaders: Ben Waxman, AFL-CIO, along with OCSEA Operations Director Bruce Wyngaard and AFSCME’s Patrick Burk We learned in 2006 that when Ohio’s labor movement works together we can change the political landscape. Labor was the greatest single force that helped elect Democrats to Ohio’s key state-wide offices in 2006. Ben Waxman, Statewide Coordinator for Ohio’s Labor 2008 initiatives will take you step-by-step and show you how your local chapter can have an impact on the upcoming elections. You will learn about the AFL-CIO zones and the role they play in mobilizing activist. You will see first-hand how your local chapter can work with other local unions to support Labor 2008 initiatives at the grassroots level. Patrick Burk and Bruce Wyngaard will discuss OCSEA/AFSCME’s support for Labor 2008. At the end of this workshop, you will be prepared to go back to your chapter and make “Change the Matters.” Next Wave - Part 2: Younger members and voting Workshop Leaders: Deirdre O’Neill-Wedig, Sally Meckling Whoever captures the imaginations and energy of younger voters will be the winner at the polls in November 2008, and OCSEA leaders needs to understand how they can help win over this influential group of members. At an OCSEA convention workshop last summer, activists began to discuss how to reach out and work with younger employees and union members (our “Next Wave” of activists). Now, this new workshop will continue the discussion with a panel of experts on Getting out the Youth Vote. Come listen and get engaged with Karen Gasper, Ohio Field Director of America Votes, and Greg Schultz of the Ohio Young Democrats. Workshop Leaders: Kim Fellinger, Director - OCSEA Governmental Affairs; Doug Kelly, Executive Director, Ohio Democratic Party PEOPLE is our number one priority. A few coins from everyone’s pocket translates to big change in this very important election year. Doug Kelly, Executive Director of the Ohio Democratic Party, will discuss his experience as a professional fundraiser for one of the largest state democratic parties. He’ll pass on professional tips for how to rake in new PEOPLE members. Come close the deal with our experts Health Care – Enough to Make You “Sicko”! Workshop Leader: Carol Bowshier, OCSEA Director of Health Care Policy We’ve all experienced the horror stories. Someone you know has little or no health care coverage. Even those of us who have coverage are struggling to keep it. Which presidential candidate has the best solution to the health care problem? Do you know the difference in the Republican’s and Democrat’s health care agendas? Let’s examine what will happen to your health care if either party gets elected. Who will best meet your interests? Workshop Leader: Pat Hammel, OCSEA Education Representative This workshop will provide an overview of AFSCME’s model for setting up an organizing network to strengthen the union and build power in the workplace and the chapter. It’s called Member Action Teams (MATs) and you’ll learn what resources are available to help you recruit MAT activists and set up a MAT in your chapter. See Related
