News News impacting public employee union members OCSEA assembly leaders to participate in NASHTU to advocate for federal dollars April 2008 - The annual meeting of the National Association of State Highway Transportation Unions will be held in Washington, DC April 28-30. On the afternoon of April 29 members of NASHTU visit their representatives and senators to discuss the importance of the federal funding and its role in supporting the work of Departments of Transportation across the country. The focus of the Ninth Conference will be to make NASHTU’s agenda a campaign priority for all those running for elective office. The group of unionists will also lobby in support of important NASHTU-sponsored legislation presently in front of the Congress: HR 2485 (Filner – CA) which would require public inspection of federally funded transportation projects and HR 3621 (Kilpatrick – MI) which would require a cost-benefit analysis prior to outsourcing. The conference brochures urges members participation: "This election year will be critical for highway and transportation unions. A new President and Congress will be setting the agenda for transportation issues for the next decade. If we do not take the time and effort to educate political candidates about the many downsides of outsourcing and privatization, we will not make progress on our NASHTU agenda or achieve satisfactory results from future and current policy-makers." Over the last few years NASHTU has led the fight to block language in SAFETEA-LU that would have promoted privatization and helped strengthen language on government oversight of the transportation program. Members of NASHTU have testified at Congressional hearings and participated in national transportation conferences. See Related |
