News News impacting public employee union members Register for OCSEA Steward Conference
Stewards can register online or by calling 800-266-5615, ext. 2656, 614-865-2656 or email blowe@ocsea.org. This year, there will be an emphasis on linking stewards and the political factors that impact public employees each and every day. “Stewards are our frontline warriors. They are in the trenches and have the greatest impact when it comes to talking to members about the issues that affect them,” said OCSEA Vice President Chris Mabe. “The role of a steward is not limited to contract enforcement alone. It also encompasses all aspects of our members’ job security, including those affected by political factors,” said Mabe. This might include fighting for legislation in Washington D.C. or supporting a candidate right here in Ohio who stands up for workers’ rights. Bring a Next Wave steward. As more and more stewards approach retirement, the more important it is to grow the next generation – or Next Wave – of stewards. With this in mind, OCSEA Pres. Eddie L. Parks is asking all “seasoned” stewards attending this conference to bring at least one younger steward with them. “It’s important to introduce young members to new experiences and get them involved,” said Parks. “Nothing has more impact on a young steward than having a mentor show you the ropes.” And while you’re at it, visit the Next Wave booth and get some information on how to build the next generation of stewards.
