Steward Conference workshops to offer practical tips, resources
Sept. 10, 2009 - Workshops at the the 2009 OCSEA Steward Conference support the event theme, "Proud of the Past; Prepared for Future."
Each workshop will be offered twice, once in the morning and once in the afternoon. Choose two:
The one-day conference is set for 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Hilton Columbus / Polaris located near the OCSEA Union Hall.

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS
The Evolution of the Steward’s Role – Pat Hammel, Education Representative
OCSEA stewards have a proud history of providing excellent representation to its members. Often stewards must adapt to an ever changing work environment, new provisions in the collective bargaining agreement and growing expectations of bargaining unit members. This workshop will explore how the steward role has changed since public sector collective bargaining began in Ohio and will offer practical tools and techniques developed by stewards over the years that can be take back to the chapter.

An Update On: Salary Continuation and Occupational Injury Leave and the New Oil Appeal Process – Sandra F. Bell, OCSEA General Counsel
In one of the most significant gains at the bargaining table, OCSEA negotiated a whole new category called Salary Continuation for state employees who are accidentally injured on the job. This workshop will help leaders and stewards learn how the new Salary Continuation benefit will be applied, about changes in the Occupational Injury Leave benefit and how the Oil
Appeal Process is being administered.

WOC? What is and what is not a WOC (…and the special IT process) - Sandi Friel, OCSEA Classification Arbitration Coordinator, and Michael Gee, OCSEA Paralegal
This workshop discusses the Working Out of Classification grievance process, including determining the merits of a W.O.C., the two basic deadlines that arbitrators are looking for and strategies that will focus on this process in relation to the new IT classification changes.

The Life of a Grievance after Mediation – Sandra Furman, Arbitrator and Patty Rich, OCSEA Grievance Manager
When management and the union cannot resolve a grievance the dispute may go to an independent third party for resolution. Stewards will learn first-hand from a professional arbitrator what evidence they consider, some effective ways to present a case as well as how to evaluate the merits of a grievance to determine if it should go before the arbitration committee.
