Toledo Town Hall spurs conversation

Feb. 26, 2010 - OCSEA Pres. Eddie L. Parks met with union leaders and others in Toledo at OCSEA’s second Town Hall meeting this year.

Leaders from Chapter 4800, District 1 and other subordinate bodies asked OCSEA staff how to get members more involved, how to appeal to newer members and how they could respond to attempts to reduce the size of government.

Operations Director Bruce Wyngaard told participants that bills like Senate Bill 52 are alive and well and will reappear in various forms during the aftermath of Ohio’s recession to try to deal with dwindling state revenue. Senate Bill 52 would reduce the number of state workers by 15,000 and restructure state agencies into 10 biggie-sized departments. TownHallToledo

Also on hand was Carol Drake from the Ohio Public Employees Retirement System to talk about pension plan design changes that are have been recommend by the OPERS board in an attempt to save the health care fund and keep the pension solvent for the long-term.

At the rest of the meetings across the state, President Eddie L. Parks, members of OCSEA’s senior staff and OCSEA field staff and union leadership from the area will be available to answer questions and talk about a wide range of topics.

The first hour will be an open house where OCSEA staff showcase the services that are available from OCSEA, the Union Education Trust and the Union Benefits Trust.

The second hour will be an open forum discussion where membership is invited to give feedback regarding the direction of the union.

All members are welcome and a light snack will be offered. Check back for future meeting locations.
