May 6, 2010 - During OCSEA’s “I Luv Technology Month” in May, we’ll be giving you periodic tips to help make your web experience better and to ensure you’re up to date on all the latest tech info.
When you want to go online to search OCSEA news stories or to download Summer Fun Coupons from the OCSEA website, it makes a difference what web browser you use.
What is a browser?
A browser is a piece of software that displays web pages. The browser you choose impacts a lot of things, including how a web page looks and functions, how quickly web pages open and how safe your information is while surfing the internet.
Mozilla Firefox
Firefox is currently the most popular browser, with around 46% of all web users.
Firefox is easy to use and easy to customize. They currently have over 6000 add-ons you can download including ad blockers, language translators, and shopping assistants. You can even pick your own theme, which is like having a background on your browser.
Firefox is also one of the most secure browsers, and protects you against viruses, spyware, and pop-ups. It also automatically downloads updates to protect you from the newest security threats.
Internet Explorer
Internet Explorer is the second most popular browser, with around 33% of all web users.
Internet Explorer used to be the standard, but over time it has become outdated. It doesn’t have as many features and isn’t as secure as more modern browsers.
Internet Explorer does not support modern web pages, or the technologies they use. Because of this, web pages don’t look or function the way they are supposed to in Internet Explorer.
Google Chrome
Chrome is a relatively new browser, with around 13% of all web users, but its numbers are definitely on the rise.
Chrome has a lot of cutting edge features, like being able to drag and drop tabs and links. It is also simple and easy to use, while still providing a high level of security.
