Social Networking: Friend or Foe?
|
Share
May 26, 2010 - During OCSEA’s “I Luv Technology Month” in May, we’ll be giving you periodic tips to help make your web experience better and to ensure you’re up to date on all the latest tech info.
When you want to keep in contact with OCSEA or its members, social networking can be a great option, but the idea of joining can be intimidating. What can social networking do for you, and what are the risks involved?
Advantages
Social networking websites are online communities that give you an easy way to stay connected with friends and family, as well as union brothers and sisters. You can easily organize union events, share event photos, and let all your union friends know what your union committee, chapter or subordinate body is doing.
OCSEA uses its Facebook page to stay connected with members by sharing news stories, photos, and events, and giving members the chance to voice their opinions. OCSEA also has a Twitter page which can give members quick updates on important events and news.
Risks
A big concern with social networking is privacy. In order to find friends and really enjoy a social networking website, you have to share some personal information. In order to stay safe, you should make sure that your privacy settings limit who can see your information.
Another concern is social networking and the workplace. Generally speaking, it is not a good idea to post anything that could compromise your job, including inappropriate photos or comments. If you aren’t sure whether something you want to post is appropriate, imagine it on a billboard with your boss driving past. If this makes you uncomfortable, you probably shouldn’t post it.
Also, while some studies have shown that using social networking websites at work increases productivity, many employers do not approve of using these websites while on the clock. If you have questions about appropriate uses of social networking websites and your job, please talk to your HR representative.
Conclusion
Social networking websites are powerful tools and should be used responsibly. If you are aware of your privacy settings and potential work conflicts, they can help you stay connected without compromising your identity or job.
