The time is now: Call your U.S. Representative today

Aug. 9, 2010 - The last hurdle between state and local governments and critical aid is standing before us this week. The House of Representatives must vote to approve H.R. 1586, a bill that will provide $26.1 billion to state and local governments to prevent massive job losses—and over $800 million to Ohio. This bill passed last week in the U.S. Senate thanks to your calls. Every single Democratic senator voted for the bill. With the exception of two courageous senators from Maine, every Republican senatorvoted to hand you a pink slip. That includes Sen. George Voinovich, Ohio’s own.

Here in Ohio, we will face an $8 billion budget gap next year. Without this money, thousands of Ohioans will be without crucial services and possibly their jobs.

I’m calling to urge you to save jobs by passing H.R. 1586, which includes desperately needed funding for state and local governments and school districts.

We don’t have a choice — if Congress fails again to offer aid to state and local governments, more than 900,000 public and private sector workers will lose their jobs.

You have an opportunity to save and create hundreds of thousands of public and private jobs this year, all without adding a penny to the deficit. Ohio alone faces a budget hole of $8 billion next year, and without this aid, thousands stand to lose their state services and possibly their jobs.

This is an emergency situation. Americans need jobs NOW.
