First Ohio Next Wave Conference a success

Share

Aug. 11, 2010 - Over 200 young union members and mentors from the three AFSCME Ohio affiliates OCSEA, Ohio Association of Public School Employees, and Ohio Council 8 converged on OCSEA Headquarters in Columbus this past weekend for the first Ohio AFSCME Next Wave Conference.

On Friday evening, members got to know each other by playing team building games including corn hole, wiffle ball and tug-of-war. On Saturday, Next Wavers got down to business, hearing speakers including OCSEA President Eddie L. Parks, Ohio Council 8 Education Director Mac McAlonan and Wendy Patton from the progressive think-tank Policy Matters Ohio.

Next Wavers also participated in a World Café, where they discussed key issues facing young union members, like “How can we connect our union activism to our communities?” and “What is our vision of tomorrow’s future?”

The conference ended with members signing a pledge to promote activism among young members in their unions. A mixture of fun and education made for a great, productive weekend that had the next generation of union members asking for more.

Because the event was such a success, OCSEA and the other affiliates are already looking into holding a 2011 Next Wave Conference.
