At the 2009 OCSEA Steward Conference, Pres. Eddie L. Parks gave credit where credit is due—on the union's front lines. Reflective of the 2009 conference theme, "Proud of the Past; Prepared for Future," keynote speaker Paul F. Clark described how economic, political and social challenges are impacting today's unions and explained what front-line stewards can do to get members interested and keep them involved.

Sept. 22, 2009 - Supporters of Health Care reform tell health care execs they are "Sick of It" - Nearly 100 union and social organization activists stood up to big insurance companies during rush hour on Tuesday, Sept. 22, to say they are “Sick of It.”

Sept. 9 - 10, 2009 - Lucasville picketers made up of OCSEA members and other union supporters - Former Correction Officer Jeff Ratcliffe does not want state officials and legislators to forget what happened more than 16 years ago when the Southern Ohio Correctional Institution and the surrounding community was held hostage for eleven days following a prison riot. That's why the retiree joined OCSEA members who work at the state prison in Lucasville for a two-day vigil.

Sept. 7, 2009 - Cincinnati hosts Labor Day event in support of health care reform - Labor Day, famili es and unions go hand in hand. This year, for the first time in memory, a U.S. president raised his hands in celebration with 20,000 workers and their families at a picnic Sept. 7 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Aug. 22, 2009 - Cincinnati union activists stand up for quality, affordable health care - AFSCME members and Cincinnati-area activists came out on Saturday to support the Highway to Health Care Reform bus tour, a month-long road trip across the country to keep the pressure on Congress to fix health care once and for all.

July 23 - 24, 2009 - Pathways to Excellence offers many helpful workshops
On July 23 and 24, 2009, the Ohio Quality Network sponsored two days of training at OCSEA headquarters. Four sessions were held both days, which focused on topics like conflict management, embracing change, performance management systems and more. Those who attended were also shown the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator as a way of understanding other people in work situations and life.

July 12 - 17, 2009 - Steward Academy attracts several "next wavers"
OCSEA continues to grow the union and support stewardship at its annual Steward Academy held each summer at Ohio University southwestern Ohio. This year's graduating class included several "next wavers," or public employee union members who are 35-years-old and under and want to get more involved in making OCSEA's future happen.

July 8, 2009 - OVH Georgetown leaders host union fair, see good turnout
Between 40 and 60 workers there stopped by the tables set up by the union before and after shift changes. There, they picked up information about the benefits of membership, materials from the education department, and had an opportunity to speak with someone about grievances.
