Reflective of the 2009 conference theme, "Proud of the Past; Prepared for Future," keynote speaker Paul F. Clark described how economic, political and social challenges are impacting today's unions and explained what front-line stewards can do to get members interested and keep them involved.

That's why the retiree joined OCSEA members who work at the state prison in Lucasville for a two-day vigil.

July 23 - 24, 2009 - Pathways to Excellence offers many helpful workshops
On July 23 and 24, 2009, the Ohio Quality Network sponsored two days of training at OCSEA headquarters. Four sessions were held both days, which focused Two Pathways attendees role play to demonstrate conflict resolution.on topics like conflict management, embracing change, performance management systems and more. Those who attended were also shown the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator as a way of understanding other people in work situations and life.

OCSEA Steward Academy attracts several "next wavers" to the 2009 week-long eventOCSEA continues to grow the union and support stewardship at its annual Steward Academy held each summer at Ohio University southwestern Ohio. This year's graduating class included several "next wavers," or public employee union members who are 35-years-old and under and want to get more involved in making OCSEA's future happen.

Between 40 and 60 workers there stopped by the tables set up by the union before and after shift changes. There, they picked up information about the benefits of membership, materials from the education department, and had an opportunity to speak with someone about grievances.
