Differences between UHC and MMO premiums explained

April 9, 2003 - There are three reasons why the UHC premium will increase so much in July 2003.

  1. UHC always has been a more costly HMO and this year is no exception. UHC’s administration fees are more than 5 times higher than Ohio Med’s. This, of course, causes their premium to be high.
  2. For HMOs the state pays 90% of the statewide average of all HMOs. And because UHC is above the statewide average, employees who select it will have to pay much more than 10% of the premium.
  3. Additionally an HMO that was much more expensive than UHC last year (Summacare) lowered it rates by $30 a month for family. Most other HMOs lowered their rates too this year. This of course drove the statewide average down and therefore made UHC soar even higher above the statewide average—thereby increasing the employee’s share of the premium for UHC even more.
