OCSEA offers union scholarship awards

OCSEA/AFSCME Local 11 is no longer accepting applications for the 2008 - 2009 Les Best Scholarship Fund. The program was designed to help our members and their families with education costs.

The application deadline was April 30, 2008.

Award recipients will be announced in the Summer issue of the Public Employee Quarterly magazine.

OCSEA´s scholarship fund will provide up to 12 financial awards for the 2008 - 2009 academic year to eligible union members, spouses and their dependent children.

  • Spouse College Scholarship: For spouses who are full-time students, or will begin studies in the fall; either one scholarship for $500 awarded, or two scholarships for $250 each awarded — to be determined by the committee.
  • Dependents' College Scholarship: For students entering or already enrolled full-time in a college or university; three $1,000 scholarships awarded.
  • Dependents' Vocational Scholarship: For a student entering or already enrolled full-time in a technical, trade or vocational school; one $1,000 scholarship awarded.
  • Members' College Scholarship: For members who are either full-time or part-time undergraduate students, or will begin studies in the fall; either two scholarships for $500 awarded, or four scholarships for $250 each awarded — to be determined by the committee.

Les Best Scholarship Members’ College applicants are also eligible for a book scholarship, established by OCSEA District 1 in the name of Pat Callanan-Castro who was an avid reader and a lifelong learner.

  • Pat Callanan-Castro Memorial Book Scholarship for Members: Two $150 book scholarships will be awarded to eligible members. The judges evaluating the Les Best applications will at the same time be considering potential recipients for this new Memorial Book Scholarship.

Completed application packets must include: transcripts, references, and an essay. The essay is not required for the Dependents´ Vocational Scholarship, however.

The award recipients are chosen by the Les Best Scholarship Selection Committee. The committee is an independent group of distinguished educators and labor union representatives. Their decisions are final.

If you have questions about the Les Best scholarship, please contact OCSEA's Scholarship Hotline at 614-865-4740 or toll free 800-266-5615, ext. 4740.
