Unions, members aid hurricane victims; Thousands of Gulf Coast AFSCME families affected Sept. 2, 2005 (updated Sept. 7, 2005) - Union members who want to help Gulf Coast residents devastated by Hurricane Katrina can now do so through a sister union in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. OCSEA has paired with AFSCME Council 17 to support relief efforts to its members who have been affected by the hurricane. The union represents about 8,000 state, county and municipal employees in Louisiana, a state without a collective bargaining law. Council 17 President Garland Webb said the storm devastated his area and he’s excited about OCSEA’s offer to help with financial assistance. Webb set up a special checking account for this purpose and Council 17 will provide OCSEA with a complete accounting of how our donations are used. OCSEA RESPONDS – Help AFSCME sisters and brothers victimized by Katrina through OCSEA’s Charitable Contribution Committee
The OCSEA Comptroller’s Office will mail the checks to Council 17. If you have questions, please contact David Long, Office of General Counsel, at 614-865-2641 or (toll free) 800-266-5615, ext. 2641, or send an email to dlong@ocsea.org. Nationwide, unions are mobilizing to aid the hundreds of thousands of Gulf Coast residents devastated by Hurricane Katrina.
