News OCSEA stewards take home new tools, tips from Oct. 3 conference
Oct. 6, 2009 - On Saturday, Oct. 3 at the 2009 OCSEA Steward Conference, Pres. Eddie L. Parks gave credit where credit is due—on the union's front lines with OCSEA's stewards. "Our union has a rich history of providing excellent representation to OCSEA bargaining unit members and our stewards deserve much of the credit for the union's success," Parks said. "Our number one goal as a union is to protect our members' rights! That's what our members expect, and as your president, I can promise you I will do everything in my power to achieve that goal. But I need your help." Speakers, workshop presenters, and participants took time to celebrate stewards' rich history and prepare for the future. The event was held at the Hilton Columbus / Polaris located near the OCSEA Union Hall. Reflective of the 2009 conference theme, "Proud of the Past; Prepared for Future," keynote speaker Paul F. Clark described how economic, political and social challenges are impacting today's unions and explained what front-line stewards can do to get members interested and keep them involved. Clark, who is a professor of labor studies and industrial relations at Pennsylvania State University, wrote the book Building More Effective Unions. Attendees had the opportunity to select two workshops from five options. Participants also visited the Stewards' Cyber Café where they could pick up a "Cup-Of-Know" note pad and explore OCSEA's online toolbox resources designed for stewards and local leaders. Several stewards also offered valuable insight and feedback on current offerings and future needs. See Related |
