Union activists make difference in victory on civil service "deform" bill

December 2006 - Thanks to the more than one hundred letters and calls sent to their legislators, OCSEA union activists were victorious in fighting off a civil service “deform” bill that would have brought back political paybacks and cronyism.

The harmful language in the civil service reform bill, House Bill 187, has been removed.

If the language wasn't removed, the bill would have:

• Given agencies the authority to furlough employees up to 70 days per year
• Reduced full-time employees to part-time employees for up to 70 days per year
• Limited bumping rights within a classification series
• Reduced or eliminate longevity as discipline
