Ohio law permits most public employees to work the polls on Election Day without using banked leave time.

To be eligible, you must request and receive prior approval from your supervisor or manager. The decision is up to the employer, and may depend on workload and coverage. In years past, the ability for some agencies to grant this leave has varied.

Board of Elections (BOE) officials remind public workers that to qualify an employee must request and receive prior approval from the supervisor or manager.

The board of elections pays poll workers $123.00 and more —depending on their duties— for their training and service on Election Day.

Poll workers are required to participate in a three-hour training, while the presiding judges are required to take a four-hour course.
