Report false unemployment claims filed under your name

Posted Jan. 14, 2021 by

With a rise in unemployment, Ohioans are seeing an uptick in fraudulent unemployment claims being filed under their names despite having never filed for unemployment in the state. If you or someone you know have been the victim of a fraudulent claim, report it immediately. Union leaders in ODJFS also recommend immediately filing a local police report to substantiate the dispute of fraud.

Not sure if you've been a victim of fraud? ODJFS has reported a record number of unemployment filings in 2020, which will require those people to submit a 1099-G form with their taxes. ODJFS issued 1.7 million 1099-G forms in January. If you receive a 1099-G form even though you've never paid unemployment benefits, this is a clear sign that your information was used.

To report to the Ohio Dept. of Job and Family Services that you suspect someone has used your personal information to claim unemployment benefits GO HERE or call 833-658-0394. Please note this option is to report identity theft, meaning you did not file a claim yourself, and someone has fraudulently filed a claim using your personal information. This form is NOT for reporting unemployment fraud being committed by another individual.
