- Gongwer News Service is reporting that the proposal to cut state employee retirement is off the table. According to the news source, Rep. Todd Book and Sen. Keith Faber both are saying the proposal to reduce the state’s OPERS contributions from 14 to 8 percent is dead. FULL STORY

April 28, 2009 - Cuts to the Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board budget have resulted in the layoff of numerous OCSEA members who performed custodial, grounds keeping and other duties at the Statehouse. The CSRAB Executive Director has proposed getting the work done by using inmates from the Pickaway Correctional Institution. OCSEA is urging legislators to restore funding and reject any plan that would allow inmates to do the same duties that our members performed at the Statehouse.

Subordinate body leaders, local stewards, new activists, rank-and-file members, and staff on Saturday morning were greeted warmly by the upbeat tune "Ain't no stopping us now" by McFadden and Whitehead and encouraging words of OCSEA President Eddie L. Stimulus action, negotiations paying off

(updated Feb. 18) - Pres. Barack Obama this week signed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, a federal stimulus package designed to create and save jobs to jumpstart the economy. Feb. 11, 2009 - Ohio's fight for fiscal relief continues: The Senate on Feb. 10 passed its version of the stimulus bill with a compromise amendment that cuts $25 billion in aid to states, including a $1 billion cut for aid to Ohio. Union prepares to fight budget cuts
Feb. 14, 2008 - Still reeling from the announcement that 2,700 state jobs could be cut, two mental health hospitals are to closed and 190 Developmental Center beds will be eliminated, OCSEA leaders are putting together the pieces and data to start fighting the proposed job cuts and program eliminations that come as soon as July 1 of this year. Gov. Strickland and his officials met with OCSEA leaders and staff over the last two weeks to address union concerns after he announcement that state revenues could be off by as much as a $1.9 billion by next July 2009. Governor announced budget cuts, 2 closings
Jan. 31, 2008 (updated 4:33 p.m.) - Gov. Ted Strickland held an 11 a.m. press conference where he announced budget cuts for agencies and institutions, including 2 mental health hospital closings (Cambridge and Dayton). Staff reductions are estimated between 1,500 to 2,700. Union leaders and staff met with state officials throughout the day and were set to meet with the governor this evening in an effort to learn more about how cuts might impact union members.

- The U.S. House yesterday voted 277 to 141 to override the President's veto of the Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education (Labor-HHS) spending bill for Fiscal Year 2008. - A House committee approved landmark legislation expanding the federal program providing retraining assistance to workers dislocated as a result of the nation's trade policies and modernizing the unemployment insurance program. The bill's cumulative effect is to significantly bolster the state delivery systems for the Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) and Unemployment Insurance (UI) programs while also expanding access to both programs. Good news on voter registration
Sept. 7, 2006 - Last Friday a Federal Court struck down Ken Blackwell’s new rules for voter registration. The new rules had the effect of crippling voter registration drives amongst unions, minorities and poor people. Indiana: We hate our state's private turnpike

Ken Blackwell, man responsible for the idea of privatizing the Ohio Turnpike, keeps referring to how great the concept has gone over in Indiana. Sept. 1, 2006 - COLUMBUS – The state’s prison employee union said it welcomed gubernatorial candidate Ken Blackwell’s support for reopening the Lima Correctional Institution, but wondered why it took him years to stake out a position on the facility. Court says legislature violated single-subject rule; Attorney union exclusion, contract ratification changes nullified

- The largest state employees’ union today announced that a common pleas court has struck down a union-related provision inserted into a 2002 appropriations bill that banned attorneys from belong to public employee unions. The court also overturned part of the bill that had taken away labor contract ratification duties from the full Ohio General Assembly and given them to the State Controlling Board. Franklin County Common Pleas Court Judge John P. Bessey ruled that sections of HB 675 violate the one-subject rule of the Ohio Constitution in regard to two particular amendments of the Ohio Revised Code it contained. Full Story

- The union's goal is the same: Protect MRDD clients and improve the facility closure process. However, our efforts have shifted from Senate Bill 4— vetoed recently by Gov. This new bill is nearly the same as SB 4 with a few exceptions: the time frame the Legislative Services Commision (LSC) has to do its review would be reduced from 90 days to 60 days; the time frame the commission has to do its work would also be reduced from 90 to 60 days; and a sixth appointment to the closure commission would be added. News story records union opposition to ORC 4117
Dec. 4, 2002 - Gongwer News Service reported on a fast-tracked capital appropriations measure (HB 675) which was unveiled in the House Finance & Appropriations Committee Tuesday. The 500-page bill contained language that would change the Ohio Revised Code 4117, the collective bargaining law. The revised document was reported by the panel about three hours after members received copies of it.

Civil Service Reform bill introduced by Rep. Buehrer
Nov. 26, 2002 -The General Assembly this week received far-reaching civil service reform legislation (HB 673) that would, among other things, allow state agencies to create their own evaluation systems to assess employee performance and furlough employees when fiscal problems dictate a workforce reduction.

Oct. 3, 2002 - The crowd at the East Liverpool Motor Lodge was sparse, but the candidates for state and county offices still put their respective best feet forward to get their messages out to voters. Just say "no" to State Ballot Issue 1 on Nov. 5
Sept. 24, 2002 - Issue 1 is an amendment to the Constitution that would limit jail terms and restrict the discretion of judges when dealing with drug-related criminal offenses. It would constitutionally mandate drug treatment instead of jail time for eligible offenders. full story

Democrats: "Right-To-Work" legislation not welcome in Ohio
Sept. 22, 2002 - OCSEA Government Affairs Director Kim Fellinger predicts that House Bill 635 will stall out before the fall elections, but advises union members that the ``right-to-work" bill will likely take off again next year. Sept. 10, 2002 - OCSEA kicked off its 2002 PEOPLE Drive Tuesday, Sept. 3. The goal of this drive is to increase PEOPLE membership by 10% in all OCSEA Chapters under Article 4 (Checkoff) of the contract between OCSEA and the State of Ohio. Full Story
