Ohio Senate strips Statehouse employees of collective bargaining after picket over inmate labor
June 4, 2009 - OCSEA and other concerned citizens have recently been voicing their opposition to a proposal to displace recently laid off Statehouse employees with inmates from Ohio’s prisons. Now the Senate has decided to “reward” Employees of the Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board (CSRAB)employees who stood up for their rights by taking away their collective bargaining protections altogether. Urge legislators to restore funds, reject use of inmates at Statehouse
April 28, 2009 - Cuts to the Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board budget have resulted in the layoff of numerous OCSEA members who performed custodial, grounds keeping and other duties at the Statehouse. The CSRAB Executive Director has proposed getting the work done by using inmates from the Pickaway Correctional Institution. OCSEA is urging legislators to restore funding and reject any plan that would allow inmates to do the same duties that our members performed at the Statehouse.

Weekend conference offers tools for building union power, getting legislative results
April 21, 2009 - Interested in moving OCSEA from "good to great," more than 300 unionists gathered April 17 - 18 in Columbus for the Building Union Power 9 Conference. Subordinate body leaders, local stewards, new activists, rank-and-file members, and staff on Saturday morning were greeted warmly by the upbeat tune "Ain't no stopping us now" by McFadden and Whitehead and encouraging words of OCSEA President Eddie L. Stimulus action, negotiations paying off
April 8, 2009 - The union’s hard work at the bargaining table and its efforts to help get a federal stimulus package passed and ensure agency budgets are fully funded is starting to pay off. Just last week, the Director of the Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections issued a memo saying that the anticipated layoffs of 500 Corrections employees would not be taking place after all. Feb. 17, 2009 (updated Feb. 18) - Pres. Barack Obama this week signed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, a federal stimulus package designed to create and save jobs to jumpstart the economy. Urge Congress to restore state aid in final stimulus package
Feb. 11, 2009 - Ohio's fight for fiscal relief continues: The Senate on Feb. 10 passed its version of the stimulus bill with a compromise amendment that cuts $25 billion in aid to states, including a $1 billion cut for aid to Ohio. We need Congress to act now to restore fiscal aid to states and municipalities that are struggling to provide vital public services.

OCSEA petition drive urges Congress to deliver fiscal aid, economic recovery package
Jan. 26, 2009 - Local union leaders this week are reaching out to union members in the workplace and encouraging them to sign an OCSEA petition that will help protect Ohio jobs and public services. OCSEA is fighting hard for fiscal aid for state and local governments because a significant portion would go for a raise in the federal match for state Medicaid spending that could then free up state dollars to fund non-Medicaid-dependent agencies. Jan. 31, 2008 (updated 4:33 p.m.) - Gov. Ted Strickland held an 11 a.m. press conference where he announced budget cuts for agencies and institutions, including 2 mental health hospital closings (Cambridge and Dayton). Staff reductions are estimated between 1,500 to 2,700. Union leaders and staff met with state officials throughout the day and were set to meet with the governor this evening in an effort to learn more about how cuts might impact union members.

Oct. 26, 2007 - A House committee approved landmark legislation expanding the federal program providing retraining assistance to workers dislocated as a result of the nation's trade policies and modernizing the unemployment insurance program. The bill's cumulative effect is to significantly bolster the state delivery systems for the Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) and Unemployment Insurance (UI) programs while also expanding access to both programs. Good news on voter registration
Sept. 7, 2006 - Last Friday a Federal Court struck down Ken Blackwell’s new rules for voter registration. The new rules had the effect of crippling voter registration drives amongst unions, minorities and poor people. Sept. 7, 2006 - Ken Blackwell, man responsible for the idea of privatizing the Ohio Turnpike, keeps referring to how great the concept has gone over in Indiana. Court says legislature violated single-subject rule; Attorney union exclusion, contract ratification changes nullified
July 15, 2005 - The largest state employees’ union today announced that a common pleas court has struck down a union-related provision inserted into a 2002 appropriations bill that banned attorneys from belong to public employee unions. The court also overturned part of the bill that had taken away labor contract ratification duties from the full Ohio General Assembly and given them to the State Controlling Board. Franklin County Common Pleas Court Judge John P. Bessey ruled that sections of HB 675 violate the one-subject rule of the Ohio Constitution in regard to two particular amendments of the Ohio Revised Code it contained. Full Story

While OCSEA state employee union members' overtime pay is covered in the
contract, changes in federal law could impact Ohio in the future. State
legislators and negotiators likely would be pressured to conform to new
federal standards and reduce OT pay benefits at the next bargaining session
in 2005. The Department of Labor wants to enact the new rules by March
2004, meanwhile union members across the nation are working to block this

reported on a fast-tracked capital appropriations measure (HB 675) which
was unveiled in the House Finance & Appropriations Committee Tuesday.
The 500-page bill contained language that would change the Ohio Revised
Code 4117, the collective bargaining law. The revised document was reported
by the panel about three hours after members received copies of it.
