Writing elected officials

COMPOSING YOUR LETTER
A good letter clearly and concisely spells out why you, as a constituent, are interested in a particular issue.

  • Personal letters are preferred to form letters
  • Check the spelling of names and the proper form of address
  • Identify yourself as a constituent by indicating your address
  • Explain why the particular issue is important to you (your community)
  • Any personal examples that can be used are very effective
  • If you are writing about a specific piece of legislation, be sure to indicate the number of the legislation
  • Make it clear what action you would like to see the official take
  • Ask to be informed of their position on the issue
  • Include your return address clearly printed or typed
  • Express your thanks—being rude or threatening hurts your position

NOTE: Please report any responses to the OCSEA/AFSCME Governmental Affairs Department.
