News Your source on political action, voter info & legislation Bush budget choices wrong for Ohio; March 14, 2007 - The President's budget is once again attacking vital public services, including health care, education, child care, and housing. But this year, we can make sure Congress fights for a budget that puts working families and their needs first.
The Emergency Campaign for America's Priorities (ECAP) led by AFSCME has launched a petition opposing President Bush's plan. Already 6,400 have signed the petition calling on Congress to restore America's right to adequate health care, food, housing, education and the economic security to live with dignity. Need more facts? Check out the joint study released yesterday by the Coalition on Human Needs and ECAP. It is titled "First Things First for Ohio: The President's Budget Makes the Wrong Choices for Ohio." In simple terms, this analysis describes the damaging impact the president's FY 2008 budget would have on an already-struggling Ohio: "The budget proposal that President Bush just sent to Congress makes the wrong choices. It would cut programs that are needed to build a prosperous future for our communities, Ohio and the nation. "It would make permanent the tax cuts that benefit millionaires and leave a legacy of debt for our children. It would trim the federal budget by shifting costs to Ohio and other states, and by denying aid to the vulnerable. And it escalates the damage over time, making significant cuts in 2008 that become truly devastating by 2012." ECAP is a nationwide campaign of national and grassroots organizations committed to reversing the administration’s policy of drastic cuts to programs that primarily benefit the poor and middle class in order to finance tax cuts that benefit the wealthy and special interests. The Coalition on Human Needs is an alliance of national organizations working together to promote public policies which address the needs of low-income and other vulnerable populations. The Coalition’s members include civil rights, religious, labor and professional organizations and those concerned with the well being of children, women, the elderly and people with disabilities.
