 NOT OVER YET...
Bush delivers on promise to veto
Labor-HHS-Education spending bill

Keep up the pressure!
Urge Congress to OVERRIDE Bush Veto

Nov. 13, 2007 - This morning President George Bush made good on his "promise" to veto the Labor-Health and Human Services-Education spending bill for Fiscal Year 2008 (H.R. 3043) because he said it was full of pork and exceeded his budget.

Please continue calling your U.S. Congressional Representative at 1-888-460-0813.

The bill reflects a compromise between the spending levels in the original House and Senate versions of the legislation, and contains $9.8 billion more in spending for labor, human services, health care, and education programs than Bush proposed in his budget.

The Senate had stripped out of the bill funding for Military Construction and the Veterans Administration.

The Senate and House will schedule votes, probably this week, to attempt to reach the two-thirds supermajority required to override today's veto.

Several Ohio Congressional Representatives were among those who helped passed this appropriations bill Thursday, Nov. 8, but we still need you to help keep the pressure on.

Please continue calling your U.S. Congressional Representative at 1-888-460-0813. For example, if Deborah Pryce is your representative, tell her thank you for a yes vote on Nov. 8 and urge her to help override the veto.

As AFSCME members, we are directly affected by this bill because it funds the work we do. Simply put, the more federal dollars we have funding our work, the more leverage we have during contract negotiations.

These funding proposals also impact our families and the services we all receive. For example, the bill contained medical research dollars for cancer and Multiple Sclerosis. Who doesn't know a friend or relative with one of these auto immune diseases?

Or, who doesn't know someone who is under-employed or just plain out of work thanks to the staggering economy and lack of manufacturing. Increased unemployment assistance will help... and this is work that OCSEA members perform.

President Bush delivered on his veto "promise" but let's not stop trying to override his poor decision.

Tell your representative to VOTE YES on the domestic funding bill and to OPPOSE President Bush's reckless veto.

Call 1-888-460-0813 and follow this simple script:

Hello, my name is [________], and I live in [__________], Ohio.

I'm calling to urge Representative [________] to vote for the Labor-HHS-Education bill and invest in vital needs here at home. This bill includes badly needed investments in health care, unemployment services, Head Start and services for veterans and children.

I'm also asking Representative [________] to vote to override President Bush's threatened bill, if this bill passes.

If we can find billions of dollars for the Iraq War, we can find the money for vital needs back here in America.
