MRDD, MH union leaders address paper layoffs, work to reduce job loss

May 1, 2008 - Union leadership in the Ohio Department of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities (ODMR/DD) has wrapped up its “paper layoff” process.

Meanwhile, chapter officers in the Ohio Department of Mental Health (ODMH) are in the process of concluding their process as well.

ODMR/DD   Originally in ODMR/DD, 300 OCSEA employees were selected for layoff. But thanks to savvy negotiations by the union, approximately 24 OCSEA members’ jobs are scheduled to be abolished.

Even that figure could decrease. MR leadership recently presented a proposal to ODMR/DD in an effort to save some of those 24 positions.

Union reps also struck an agreement so those same employees can apply for Therapeutic Program Worker positions, as long as they meet minimum qualifications.

ODMH   Dayton, Summit and Toledo MH chapters completed their layoff process this week.

There were 18 layoffs between the three hospitals, both voluntary and involuntary.

Twenty new positions created at Toledo as a result of the Dayton hospital closure were not selected by those targeted for abolishment and may have to be posted.

The Cambridge paper layoff process is Thursday.
