News Your source on political action, voter info & legislation Gather signatures to secure paid sick days for Ohio families May 9, 2008 - When our state legislators failed to act by Thursday, May 8, on the Ohio Healthy Families Act, a statewide coalition responded by launching a massive signature gathering operation to place the proposal on the Nov. 4 ballot for voters to decide. Endorsed by the OCSEA Board of Directors, the proposed legislation would ensure middle-class workers—the backbone of Ohio's economy—have the opportunity to earn paid sick days. The law would require employers with 25 or more employees to provide up to 7 paid sick days a year for full-time workers and 3 days for part-time employees. May 8 marked the group's first opportunity to do so after a four-month period in which the General Assembly had the opportunity to move the legislation forward, but refused. Now, hundreds of volunteers are striving to gather tens of thousands of signatures by Aug. 6, 2008. There is a 90-day window in which signatures— the second set since this process started more than a year ago—can be collected and petitions submitted to Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner. ee Related
