May 21, 2008 - The steering committee for Faith Vote Columbus met recently to discuss its 2008 voter education goals. OCSEA is part of this non-partisan coalition of religious congregations, neighborhood associations, and labor unions. LEARN MORE The group wants to increase voter turnout by 12,500 in low-performing wards and precincts in Linden, the Near East Side, the South Side, Hilltop, Weinland Park, Berwyn East, and East Columbus. The following voter registration walks are planned:
"So far this spring we have had seven voter walks. We had 122 volunteers walking and contacted 855 voters," OCSEA Operations Director Don Conley said of the non-partisan group's voter registration efforts, adding that all volunteers receive training. "We were able to register 101 new voters and a number of people volunteered to participate in future walks." Faith Vote Columbus activists also want to hold candidates who are running for state and national office accountable to a locally-generated platform on issues of poverty and social justice.
