Get Ohioans back to work; Stop cuts to federal employment services funding

June 24, 2008 - (updated June 25, 2008) - It’s that time again. Federal employment services funding to states is yet again under review by Congress. And, it’s no surprise that proposed cuts to important employment services programs – known as Wagner-Peyser – are to be expected.

TAKE ACTION

1. EMAIL YOUR LEGISLATOR - All OCSEA members are being asked to contact their U.S. House Representative TODAY to urge them to support full funding for these programs that Ohio so direly needs.

2. MAKE PHONE CALLS -
Step A - Reinforce your message by following up with a quick phone call to your U.S. House Representative at 1-888-460-0813.

Step B - Dial 1-888-460-0813, ask for the House Appropriations Committee committee members below, and urge them to oppose any cuts and influence fellow committee members to join them in opposition to ES cuts.:
- David Hobson (R-OH 7)
- Ralph Regula (R- OH 16)

As we’ve said time and time again, severely reducing employment services funds, as has been continually recommended by President Bush throughout his tenure, would undermine state and local efforts to re-employ workers. Also, it could likely have harmful impact on the jobs of state civil service staff who provide employment service in One-Stops, which includes approximately 250 OCSEA members in ODJFS.

Members of the U.S. House Appropriations Committee will meet this Wednesday June 25 for a “markup” session to debate and potentially amend and/or rewrite legislation surrounding the program.

OCSEA members are encouraged to contact their representatives and Ohio Congress members who serve on the committee TODAY to ask that they fully fund these programs that Ohio so direly needs.

“We don’t want it to appear as if we’re crying wolf on this issue. That’s the last thing we want to do. Sure, these reviews happen all the time, and it’s exactly that reason why it’s so important to have friends in Congress and in the White House at all times. They have such influence on the programs that impact the work we do,” said OCSEA/ ODJFS Assembly President Tommy Jones.

OCSEA members have been successful fighting these attacks many times in the past. "However, it's our PEOPLE dollars that continue to give us a voice in Congress on issues like employment services funding," noted OCSEA President Eddie Parks.

“We have to take a stand and tell these politicians: We will support YOU if and only if you support US. And the best way to get this message across is through contributing and increasing our contributions to PEOPLE."
