News Your source on political action, voter info & legislation Union members statewide called, wrote to legislators on OCSEA's Day of Action
June 24, 2009 - Four buildings in downtown Columbus participated in OCSEA's June 23 Day of Action in an effort to save their jobs, and the jobs of their union brothers and sisters. Union members set up tables at the Lazarus Building, the William Green building, the Riffe Center, and the State Office Tower to distribute literature and ask members to sign postcards addressed to their legislators. Members wrote fervantly to decision makers, asking them to help protect OCSEA members and valuable state services, and consider them a priority when voting on the state budget. The budget deadline is July 1, and OCSEA members are using the time they have left to the best of their advantage. By teaming up and uniting under one clear message, "save our services," the union is making its presence known to those with the power to determine their fates. Members know that sitting around and not doing anything will not render positive results. The only way to protect jobs is to remind those who matter just how crucial they are. "We got out there and persuaded people to do something," said Bev Trent, BWC Chap. 2535, who manned a table in the William Green building. "We can tell them all we want, but they have to do it. We got it done today." To show further opposition to the additional reductions being proposed, this time to the state's contributions to the Ohio Public Employees Retirement System, the top leaders from the Ohio AFL-CIO, the Ohio Civil Services Employees Association, AFSCME Ohio Council 8, the Ohio Association of Public School Employees, AFSCME Retiree Chap. 1184, the Ohio Education Association, the Ohio Federation of Teachers, the Fraternal Order of Police, the Service Employees International Union District 1199, the Alliance for Retired Americans and the Ohio Public Employee Retirees, Inc. will gather today at the Statehouse from 11 a.m. until noon. Contact your legislators today via phone or e-mail. Your job depends on it. See Related |
