News Your source on political action, voter info & legislation OCSEA kicks BWC privatization to the curb June 26, 2009 (Columbus) – In a huge victory for OCSEA activists in BWC who fought the measure, the proposal to study privatizing the Bureau of Workers’ Compensation is officially dead. A conference committee passed the BWC budget by a 6-0 vote, without a BWC privatization task force in place. Tell them you appreciate their efforts in keeping the Bureau of Workers’ Compensation efficient and effective….and state-operated! The Senate had added language to H.B. 15 that would have created a task force to study turning over Worker’s Compensation to private insurers. A compromise was hammered out in conference committee that will allow employers to receive discounted rates by participating in workplace safety and drug programs. As for the rest of the state budget, the Conference Committee will be meeting over the weekend to discuss House Bill 1, the budget bill. Because of large, coordinated events like OCSEA’s June 23 Day of Action, opposition is mounting against balancing the budget by slashing state services. BWC activists distributed over 150 post cards for members to write to legislattors in two days. Keep up the pressure by contacting your legislator and the governor now. This is one more example of your PEOPLE dollars at work.
