Oct. 27, 2009 - OCSEA activists this morning spoke at a press conference to speak out against Senate Bill 52, a bill that is proposing drastic cuts to state government.

Hearings were held Tuesday on the bill that would turn 24 agencies into 10 and cut 11,000 state employees.

Speakers included:

  • OCSEA Vice Pres. Chris Mabe (pictured right);
  • Annie Person, DYS Assembly President;
  • Monty Blanton, MH/MR/OVH Assembly President;
  • Cindy Bobbitt, OCSEA State Board of Directors;
  • Karen Baker, auditor for ODJFS;
  • Sen. Teresa Fedor
  • Sen. Ray Miller

OCSEA members spoke about the cuts their respective agencies have already faced in the last decade, and why more cuts are not the answer. Painful, expensive and failed mergers, such as the one that resulted in ODJFS, are not the best way, either, said Bobbitt.

“The ODJFS merger did not accomplish its goals or reducing duplication,” she said. “Rather, it’s caused some services to go away all together.”

Activists are asked to call their legislators all this week to let them know your reasons for not supporting SB 52. If you haven’t already, email your state senator now. Or go to ocsea.org/lookup to get your state senator’s phone number and call now.
