News Your source on political action, voter info & legislation Union activists make history with House approval of health care reform legislation Nov. 9, 2009 - The fight for quality, affordable health care passed a historic milestone the evening of Saturday, Nov. 7. For the first time in more than 100 years, the House of Representatives passed a comprehensive health care reform bill — the Affordable Health Care for America Act. OCSEA leaders want to thank all union members who helped make this happen! In what was a very close vote (220 – 215), eight Ohio representatives were among those who cast critical yes votes and sided with working families and the middle class, instead of insurance company CEOs. Now, take a moment to thank legislators who voted last week to approve H.R. 3962 and to hold accountable those who failed to support it (see list below).
The bill that passed the House is not perfect, but it is a very strong bill. And, make no mistake: Your calls, emails and faxes over the last few months made this happen. Last week, in fact, AFSCME members nationwide generated thousands of calls and letters to members of Congress. The fight for real reform, however, is far from over. The fight continues and will intensify when the Senate takes up its bill. Working families who want real reform face even stiffer opposition in the Senate — not to mention from the insurance companies that are determined to beat this bill at any cost. When the Senate passes its bill, the differences will need to be reconciled with the House's version. That's why we need to maintain support from the House to make sure we get the real change we voted for last year—not some piecemeal legislation that leaves middle class families out in the cold. Stay tuned as we get closer to securing real health care reform for all Americans and making a positive impact on OCSEA's future contract negotiations. See Related
