Feb. 18, 2010 - The truth is this recession is far deeper than anyone imagined. And the aid provided by the Federal Recovery Act will end soon – leaving states no choice but to continue cutting away at the agencies that provide vital state services and money for local economies.

Use the phone script below to tell U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown how services would be affected at your government agency if you weren’t there to provide them.

Here's the low down:

  • It's been calculated that Ohio tax receipts are under expectations and that without an extension of the federal stimulus money Ohio would be nearly a billion in debt by summer.
  • Economists say that unless we do something to help state and local governments address their shortfalls, 900,000 Americans will lose their jobs this year, and more than 3 million in will be out of work by 2012 – many of those will be right here in Ohio and will include public sector employees.
  • The most effective way to stimulate local economies and increase job creation is to insert federal assistance directly into the state programs that have been struggling. The return is direct and immediate. Every dollar that the federal government invests in state and local assistance produces a return of $1.41 in the local economy – creating and saving jobs in schools, hospitals, and police departments, and preserving critical public service and infrastructure needs. That’s exactly the kind of economic growth that Ohio needs to rebound.
  • With a smart, effective jobs legislation that includes targeted assistance to state and local governments, Congress can prevent that disaster and help get the economy back on track right here in Ohio.

CALL SENATOR SHERROD BROWN

888-460-0813

HERE'S A SAMPLE PHONE SCRIPT:

Hello, my name is _________ and I'm an Ohioan who works at ______ [insert agency here].

I’d like to speak to the person who is working on the Obama Jobs bill. I’m calling to make sure that Senator Brown supports and fights for investment in public services like Medicaid, education and those I provide like ______ [insert services here]. Economists on the left and right agree that helping state and local governments is one of the best ways to save and create jobs.

In fact, every dollar invested in public services creates $1.41 in economic growth – and that means jobs. If you don’t help state and local governments with their budgets, we will lose three million more jobs. That’s the last thing we need right now.

Can I count on Senator Brown to support and fight for aid for state and local governments?

Thank you!
