Poll Workers Ohio law permits public employees to work polls without using banked leave time; Ohio law permits most public employees to work the polls on Election Day without using banked leave time. To be eligible, you must request and receive prior approval from your supervisor or manager. The decision is up to the employer, and may depend on workload and coverage. In years past, the ability for some agencies to grant this leave has varied. Board of Elections (BOE) officials remind public workers that to qualify an employee must request and receive prior approval from the supervisor or manager. Presiding judges are paid $160 for the work, training and transportation costs. The presiding judges are required to take a four-hour training course.
