Union mourns loss of JCO Hesson
May 4, 2009 - OCSEA and the larger AFSCME family are mourning the loss of one of their own. Juvenile Correction Officer William L. “Bill” Hesson, who worked at the Cuyahoga Hills Juvenile Correctional Facility, died on the job April 29, 2009. FULL STORY
OCSEA warns legislators: No more cuts in DR&C
March 17, 2009 - Testifying before the House Finance Transportation and Justice Subcommittee, DR&C Assembly Vice President and State Board of Director’s member Tim Roberts cautioned legislators not to make any decisions that would further erode the staffing ratios in Ohio’s state prison system. DR&C Director Terry Collins indicated in testimony in April that the department may be forced to close a prison unless proposed sentencing reform was passed. FULL STORY
Belmont picket pays off; Inmate contraband identified, removed from prison
May 8, 2008 - A picket and media day at Belmont Chapter 710 has paid off for union leadership. Local union leaders walked the picket line on Friday, May 2, protesting employee cuts and the increasing violence at the prison. Now this week, management called for a “clear out” at BeCI using Special Response Teams from 12 institutions. FULL STORY

May 7, 2008 - OCSEA members picketed from dawn until dusk outside of the Belmont Correctional Institution on Friday, May 2. The group was protesting agency budget cuts designed to eliminate 701 positions statewide in the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections. FULL STORY

Veeda Rucker, WCI
May 5, 2008 - Veeda Rucker was named the 2008 Correction Officer of Year at a May 2 awards ceremony held at the Reginald A. Wilkinson Corrections Training Academy in Orient. A Correction Officer from each of Ohio's 30 state-operated prisons, along with their family members, friends, DRC staff, and union leaders were present for the announcement of the recipient of the Ronald C. Union leaders say cuts could affect security
May 2, 2008 (Orient) - Union members who work in the Department of Rehabilitation and Correction today participated in the 2008 Ronald C. Marshall Award ceremony recognizing correctional employees statewide.
