Veterans News on active duty and veterans impacting public employee union members Union seeks member input on creation of new state agency
Sept. 13, 2007 - Gov. Ted Strickland, by Executive Order (PDF), has established a study council to provide recommendations regarding the creation of an Ohio Department of Veterans Affairs. The purpose of the council is to look at how veteran services can be better structured and how Ohio can maximize benefits they have a right to receive. “Ohio veterans have bravely and honorably served our nation around the world,” Strickland said. “This executive order lays the foundation to ensure Ohio’s veterans and their families will always have a strong voice in state government.” OCSEA members deliver services to veterans. For example, OCSEA members care for the veterans at the Ohio Veterans Home and they also work at the Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS) providing employment services to veterans. On the average, Ohio veterans receive significantly less than veterans in other states. "I believe we should pull down hundreds of millions of dollars in federal resources—perhaps as much as one billion dollars—for our veterans," Strickland told union activists at the Aug. 23 - 25 OCSEA Biennial Convention in Columbus. "Ohio veterans rank dead last in the nation for the resources they receive." The study council will report its findings no later than the Dec. 31, 2007, deadline. OCSEA will continue to monitor the related legislative hearings, so stay tuned for e-updates and check back at this website. Subscribe to union email to get updates.
