Consumer advocate Cordray to speak at President's Conference

Posted Aug. 16, 2016 by

Richard Cordray, the Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the federal agency that protects Americans from big banks, debt collectors and their lobbying armies, will join the list of powerhouse speakers at the upcoming OCSEA President's Conference. The Conference is the union's official election kick-off that will take place on August 27 in Columbus.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau was created in 2011 as the result of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act passed in 2010. The agency was created to help clean up the financial mess left behind after the housing market crash and the Great Recession of the late 2000's.

Under the direction of Ohio native son Cordray, the agency has been a watchdog to keep credit card issuers, mortgage lenders, and student loan marketers from cheating consumers. In the five years since its inception, Cordray's agency has fought to protect hard-working consumers from harmful practices that leave them prey to financial institutions and drain their finances. The agency has saved American consumers over a billion dollars alone just by curbing illegal credit card practices.

Cordray will join OCSEA President's Conference speakers Ted Strickland, candidate for U.S. Senate; AFSCME President Lee Saunders; Ohio State Sens. Joe Schiavoni and Capris Cafaro; and Ohio Democratic Party Chair David Pepper.

With a lot on the line for public sector unions this election–from defeating Right to Work to the U.S. Supreme Court selection–it’s vital that activists come together to strategize and energize about what’s at stake this year. The OCSEA President's Conference will give union leaders the tools to fight these fights and more.
