Commit to your community on January 17 MLK Day of service

Posted Jan. 11, 2022 by

As our nation celebrates the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. this weekend and into next week, we must never forget the longstanding bond between the labor and civil rights movements and how we, as public employee union members, can educate ourselves and empower others to carry on the fight for justice and equality on the job and in our communities. This is carried on, not only by our words but also actions as union members standing up for justice for all.

Observed each year on the third Monday in January, MLK Day is the only federal holiday designated as a national day of service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities. Unions and public employment is built on tenants of supporting others and building up our communities for the better. While OCSEA members support the citizens of Ohio daily, through the work they do, we encourage you to think outside the box and explore additional ways of serving your community this MLK Day. Whether it's helping a neighbor in need or volunteering for a community organization, AmeriCorps offers many MLK Day of Service resources and tips to help you, your chapter, your family, friends and neighbors give back.
