Ohio's roadways can be a dangerous place, and no Ohioans know this better than our union members in ODOT who work and travel them everyday. This Valentine's weekend was a harsh reminder of those dangers when ODOT highway technicians gathering cones in Hocking County narrowly walked away with their lives after their work truck was struck by a van.
"Please move over, slow down, and pay attention when you’re in a work zone. Like you, our people want to go home at the end of the day," ODOT urged the traveling public in a Facebook post.
But this isn't just a reminder, it's the law. Ohio’s Move Over Law requires motorists to cautiously shift over one lane—or
slow down if changing lanes is not possible—when passing any vehicle
with flashing lights on the side of a road. Its purpose, thanks in part to joint efforts by ODOT and OCSEA, is to protect
everyone who works on our roads and everyone who travels on them.
