OCSEA's Ohio Dept. of Natural Resources Chapter 2515 turned a fundraiser for the Combined Charitable Campaign into a team building exercise this week with an emphasis on the word “exercise.”
Chapter President Karl Hildebrand says the chapter wanted to do something different and healthier than the usual bake sale or cookout to raise money for charity, so the chapter held a 2.5K race and walk. More than a dozen chapter members volunteered to help stage the event at ODNR’s Fountain Square headquarters off of Morse Road. The race was held yesterday.
“Some of the people who volunteered haven’t done this kind of volunteering with us before, so it was nice to get some new people involved,” Karl said. The volunteers not only set up the racecourse, but they also designed racing bibs and medals with an appropriate theme of “Nature Moves Us.” Every runner and walker who took part in the event donated money to the CCC as an entry fee.
Any ODNR employee from across the state could participate, but one office stood out from all the rest, as the top three finishers in the 2.5K race all work for ODNR’s office at Zaleski State Forest.
The deadline to donate to the annual Combined Charitable Campaign is tomorrow, October 17. CCC is an easy way for State of Ohio employees to donate to one or more of 1,100 local, regional, and international charitable organizations. CCC consolidates many charitable campaigns into one, asking State of Ohio employees to voluntarily donate through payroll deductions or a one-time gift.
The CCC has been a joint union and state campaign for 35 years. All OCSEA members are encouraged to participate as a way to give back to their communities and to important charities that make Ohio strong. Learn more about the CCC.

Federal unions call for end to shutdown, back pay for federal union workers
|
The national labor movement is calling on Congress to Get to work! Fund the government! Fix the health care crisis! And put working people first!
This week, the AFL-CIO wrote: "When the government shuts down, hundreds of thousands of federal workers are put on leave or will be forced to work without pay. More than 80% of those workers live outside Washington, D.C., running the services we rely on—caring for our veterans, processing Social Security applications, keeping our food and water safe, protecting us at airports and responding during natural disasters."
The AFL-CIO is urging Americans to make calls to House Speaker Mike Johnson, Senate Majority Leader John Thune, and Ohio's senators and representatives to tell them to get to work, fund the government and stop the health care crisis. Call NOW: 844-896-5059.
