OCSEA honors former president with Union Hall renaming, new sign
|
As a lasting tribute to Ron Alexander’s legacy, including leading the labor union for 24 years, OCSEA’s Board of Directors recently voted to name the OCSEA Union Hall in Westerville, the Ronald C. Alexander Union Hall.
Alexander was honored last week with a ceremony officially renaming the OCSEA Union Hall and an unveiling of a new sign that bears his name.
Alexander has called building the union hall one of his biggest accomplishments as OCSEA’s President. He says he’s humbled that the hall has been named after him. Alexander thanked the OCSEA Board for the celebration of his long history leading the union, which included retaining collective bargaining for Ohio state employees, enforcing contracts, protecting pensions and fighting for OCSEA retirees.
OCSEA Pres. Chris Mabe called brother Alexander a close friend and mentor, and said, “I’m grateful every day for the example Ron set for me and for the strong foundation he laid for our union.” Watch a video of the unveiling ceremony below:

Attend an upcoming "What is Mappening?" event for fair representation

We Are Ohio is holding three "What’s Mappening?" events across Ohio in the next week, and all Ohioans are invited to come out and join the labor coalition to show the politicians in Columbus how "We The People" can do their job easily to produce a map that represents all Ohioans––without political shenanigans!
The first "What's Mappening?" meeting will take place in Bowling Green on Thursday, October 23 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the Bowling Green Public Library. Events will follow in Dayton and Kent.

AFSCME Retirees are taking action as government shutdown drags on
|
As the government shutdown, which began Oct. 1, drags on, AFSCME retirees are taking action. They are urging their lawmakers to end the shutdown by lowering health care costs and funding public services.
At a tele-town hall last week, AFSCME retirees spoke about the urgency of the moment. If Congress allows the Affordable Care Act tax credits to expire at the end of 2025, health care costs will increase for everyone and access to health care will diminish, they warned. The tele-town hall also featured former U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown, of Ohio. Brown has been a tireless advocate of working families and retirees.
The shutdown is also delaying the release of key government data, including the announcement of the annual Social Security cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for tens of millions of beneficiaries. The Social Security COLA is made each year based on inflation, and the Consumer Price Index (CPI), an official government measure of inflation, has also been delayed. Read more.

AFSCME wins in court to temporarily halt firings of federal workers during shutdown
|
A judge ruled last week to immediately halt the mass firing of federal employees during the government shutdown. The judge has sided with AFSCME and AFGE, who challenged the government's plan to conduct illegal shutdown firings when the shutdown was announced in September and immediately followed with a motion for temporary injunction when the government shutdown commenced.
The Court temporarily blocked the federal government from issuing any layoff notices during the shutdown in components of the federal government where AFSCME or AFGE represent employees, protecting AFSCME members from termination at agencies including USDA, FAA, DOJ, Peace Corps, and more.
